Dear Readers,
Bulan Ramadhon tiba lagi. Setiap kali bulan puasa menjelang, pasti ada perkara-perkara yang berkaitan dengannya menjadi bahan perbualan. Salah satu daripadanya adalah Pasar Ramadhon.
Pasar Ramadhan has been around since as long as I could remember. Recently, there's an abbreviation to it: PaRampampammampamm eh no itu lagu Paramore. I don't really understand the abbreviation; initially i got confused with the late actor Param, who passed away in 2009, (you kids don't really know him).
But anyway, the issue with PaRams has always been either one of the following: 1) overspending, 2) bad foods 3) inconvenience (too crowded, lack of parking).
Well worry no more my friends. For my capacity and experience as both a PaRam frequenter and an Operations Strategy Executive, i shall provide tips and tricks in ensuring that your next trip to a PaRam will be a worthwhile one.
1) Location, location, Location
These are the questions that you should be asking yourself before you start going to a PaRam. If you have to waft through a horde of frenzied car drivers who are all rushing to get back home although a lot of them are not fasting, then let me tell you forget going to that PaRam that is far from your home, or the one that has parking for 10 Kancils only, double parked.
Most probably, you and that PaRam are not meant to be together and thus, skip it and go somewhere nearer to your house or with easier parking instead.
Another solution is to go to the one nearer to your workplace. Grab some kuihs and smile all the way through the traffic jam because you know that even if you couldn't make it on time for iftar, you have something to eat in the car.
2) Partners for iftar
3) The big question
Dah tanya isteri / housemate anda? Ok. Apa dia jawab?
a) "I malas la sayam, harini i banyak kerja banyak gila gosip nak kena baca kat ofis tau."
Similar to the previous tip, find a main dish, but this time try to focus on some sort of lauk, like ayam percik, or gulai kawah, or ikan bakar. Again, which one to choose? And i should probably mention here that i caution you guys on buying lauks per se at PaRams. Details on next tips.
Sekiranya anda beli lagi ayam percik ataupun laksa, siapa nak makan tu? Akhirnya membazir. Tak pun anda makan terlalu banyak, maka sama seperti tak puasa.
4) So many stalls, so little time!
So which stall to choose? One popular rule is, if it has long queue, then the food should be good. But bear in mind that you should probably verify this for a few days before finally confirming. Also there's the issue of time constraint. If you don't have much time, then buy somewhere with shorter queues.
Also note the stall that frequently run out of foods well before iftar.
Again, watch the crowd.
5) The RM5 rule
This is something i devised in order to control my spending at PaRams. Basically, if i'm just buying side dishes, i'd limit my spending to RM5. Try your best to abide by this rule. Even if you have to overshoot the budget, do it by a small margin.
If you're buying main dishes on the other hand, you might want to double or triple your limit of spending. I'd recommend doubling, but it's really your call and it also depends on factors such as your appetite, or your regular daily spending on food.
Lets say you usually spend RM5 for a normal nasi lunch with lauk, then try to keep your spending within that. I know its hard, since everything is so tempting, but that's why we have the next tip...
6) But everything looks so delicious!
That's because you're fasting, numbnut. Ketika anda lapar, semua benda pun kelihatan sedap. Tengok iklan terliur. Bau ayam bakar terliur. Apatah lagi amoi berskirt pendek. Eh tu nafsu lain.
Point is, everything WILL look delicious when you're fasting. So persevere.
7) Some foods to be aware of..
I mentioned previously that one should be careful when buying nasi berlauk from a stall. Reason is because you'll never know when was the food made, how was it made, or even who made them.
Some foods, have a possibility to be prepared much earlier in the day, or much worse, days before and reheated before sale. So if the food can be prepared much earlier, then take them with a pinch of salt (literally, because it could be tasteless) and be wary of the risks.
8) Know thy seller
Ada pengecualian terhadap tips di atas. Pertama, sekiranya tip #4 telah dipatuhi. Kedua, sekiranya anda kenal penjual itu. Kenal bukanlah bermaksud tahu tarikh lahir dia dan berat badan dia, (itu creepy namanya). Tapi sekiranya anda pernah makan di kedai dia, atau memang dia rakan anda, maka anda bolehlah pergi beli ayam masak merah pakcik itu.
9) Do it. In front of me.
Another exception to tip #7 is that if the food is prepared there and then. Contohnya satay. Sah-sah dia bakar depan mata anda.
10) A network of friends
Do keep in touch with your friends who go to the same PaRam as you do. Bertukar-tukar pendapat dalam perbincangan yang melaparkan. Tanyalah kakak ofis tu, "akak beli apa semalam? sedap tak?"
Well, that's all i could think of.
Sekian.
